QUILT MAGIC WALL HANGINGS “Painting by Number Using Fabric” or “Doing a Puzzle” Relax and enjoy! This craft is very forgiving so don’t be perfectionists. Quilt Magic Wall Hanging Kit includes: Fabric Pack Laser Cut Styrofoam Board (Numbered design - Paper Pattern Pieces – Instructions HINTS and INSTRUCTIONS: General a. Be Careful and go slowly. b. Most mistakes can be remedied or will not be noticed. c. If fabric does not look good, pull it out with a pair of tweezers and try again. d. To fill accidental gouges in the board, use cotton ball pieces. e. Ironing the creased fabrics will enhance the appearance of the finished product. f. When cutting the corners (while following the instructions), pretend you are cutting an angel food cake…saw don’t crush! Cut slowly and DO NOT CUT through the back of the board. g. To protect the wall hanging, spray it with a fabric guard. h. To hang your creation, push a T-pin between the frame and the inner border into the wall or use a picture hanger glued into the board. 1. Cutting Paper Pattern Pieces a. Option: Laminate the pattern sheets before cutting. Then use double-sided tape to place the pattern pieces on the fabric. This eliminates the use of pins. b. Identify zip-lock baggies with the colors of fabric in the fabric pack. For small pieces, use one baggie for more than one color. c. Before cutting any of the fabric, cut out all paper pattern pieces. Most pattern pieces are the correct size and don’t need to be cut larger, however I usually cut outside the black line for safety. The one big exception is the inside boarder (usually numbered A). I always cut this piece bigger on all four sides. d. While cutting the paper pattern pieces use the numbered diagram found with the Styrofoam board and the color photo as a guide to sort the pieces into the baggies. e. Solid lines on pattern pieces indicate lines needing to be clipped in order to get the fabric to lie smoothly. Do not clip too much because clipping too deep could cause the fabric to pop out or be too small to cover the area completely. I clip as I am tucking the fabric into the board. 2. Fabrics a. The largest piece of fabric will be used to wrap the back of the board creating a frame. Sometimes portions of this fabric is needed for other parts of your project. This is determined while cutting and sorting the paper pattern pieces. b. Cut the largest piece according to the size listed on the instruction sheet. (ex 6X6 board cut at 10X10 fabric piece). c. Some fabrics have generous amounts and others will have just enough fabric. d. Printed Fabrics 1. Prints are usually on one side of the fabric. 2. Prints may need special attention while laying out the paper pattern pieces. For example, birds should be flying face up and design for trees should be going the same direction. 3. Check the picture and fabric to determine if the fabric needs to be turned a specific direction before pinning the fabric. 4. Be Carefull!! e. Pattern Reversals (Mirror Images) 1. Typically this happens for the arms or legs of characters. 2. The pattern will indicate mirror image and to cut 2 pieces. 3. Cut one piece right side up. Then turn the paper right side down and cut another fabric piece. f. Cutting Fabric 1. BEFORE CUTTING, pin or tape the entire paper pattern pieces to the corresponding fabric. DO NOT use pins on the gold and silver shiny lame fabric. Use double stick tape. 2. It is very important to make sure all of the pieces fit on the fabric before starting to cut the fabric; otherwise there might not be enough fabric. 3. Tucking a. Open the laser cut grooves on the board prior to tucking the fabric. b. While tucking the fabric in the grooves, make sure the fabric is not folded. This enhances the look of the finished project. c. NOTE: I open the grooves as I am tucking the fabric. 4. Tools a. Instructions call for: Other Options: Dinner knife with serrated edge Small screwdrivers Dull dinner knife McDonald’s knife Smoothest, no tooth butter knife Tupperware Citrus Peeler Double-sided scaler Small Fingernail tools INSTRUCTIONS: (Follow along with Quilt Magic Instructions) b. Step 1 1. Use the dinner knife with a serrated edge (only time used) to cut the corners along the mitered grove. 2. Remember, pretend you are cutting an angel food cake—SAW DO NOT crush. c. Step 2 1. If the fabric provided is larger than the size needed, cut off the excess fabric. Size requirements are listed on the top of the Quilt Magic instructions. d. Step 3 1. Follow Quilt Magic Instruction e. Step 4 1. Before cutting the corners to 3/8”, make sure the fabric is not tucked in the grooves. I make several cuts at different lengths to get to the 3/8”size. f. Step 5 1. While tucking these excess flaps into the face of the board pull the butter knife to the outside. By pulling to the outside, all excess material is pulled and not bunched in the mitered corners. g. Step 6 1. Again, before cutting the material to 3/8”, make sure the fabric is even and again I make several cuts at different lengths to get to the 3/8” size. h. Step 7 1. Gently tuck this 3/8” fabric back into the mitered groove. Pushing hard will gouge the board. If the fabric seems hard to tuck, pull the fabric out and trim a little more. 2. Quilt Magic instructions now say to select pattern pieces and cut according fabric pieces. i. Step 8 1. Tucking the fabric pieces can begin anywhere on the project. 2. Some people tuck: 1. One fabric color at a time. 2. Follow the numbers on the pattern pieces. 3. Start at an edge or corner and move through the project. 4. Tuck the small pieces first. Extremely small areas of pattern are the most easily damaged but not the end of the world. Remember if problems arise; pad with cotton and the project will look as good as new. Just take care. 5. I start at an edge or corner, move through the project; but tuck the smaller pieces first as I get to an area. 6. The smaller tools come in handy when doing corners and small pieces.
